The game centers on finding and sharing local history. The missions and "deeds" are created by teachers as well as the students themselves and vary in difficulty, with more intense ones requiring group collaboration. The missions are documented by uploading media. Sam Levigne from the Playtime Anti-boredom Society / Situate lists some of the mission prompts that "resulted in some pretty awesome projects":
Trespassing the Future (Level 1; 10 pts): Visit a place that you will not be able to go to in ten years; for example, a place under development that will never be the same again.
Find Dirt On A Hero (Level 1; 10 pts): Find dirt on a hero that undermines their status as a hero.
Student Strike: Research successful labor strikes in American history and use the lessons you learn to organize a successful strike of your own. Force the institutional entity against which you strike to meet your demands. Make sure you document your actions with video and photos.
And from the project demo website:
An online social network and classroom competition centered on finding and sharing local history. Students had two weeks to discover how history impacts their lives, and to post pictures and video of their experiences. They got the chance to connect with a diverse group of students nationwide, and understand the crucial role history plays in everyday life.
In 10 days 300 players from across the country completed 1200 history projects. The site had 200,000 page views. 80% of the students liked Flashback more than regular class, and 11 of 12 teachers said they would definitely use it again.
