- Play and real-world social change
Making the case that “You don’t have to be a constant saint, dedicated volunteer, or name-taking activist to make the world better,” AOK allows the player to tag and share daily AOKs (Acts and Observations of Kindness) they perform, observe or reflect on. “Virtue Points” earned by players not only lead to leveling up and players status, but crucially, they also become “Cause Currency,” which in turn, is converted into “real dollars for real world charities and relief efforts.”
For example, in the month of May (2011), every virtue point earned became a penny donated to The American Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts in Japan. In the month of October, the pennies are donated to Global Green’s I AM campaign to combat climate change. AOK kicked off as a challenge on the Gameful community and full functionality was launched in late summer 2011.
The mobile app (iPhone and Android) works in tandem with the website; the core idea being to build a connected community of kindness that is taggable and shareable via a gamified system linked to a real world donation infrastructure.
The iPhone application can be found here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/aok/id432696053?mt=8
