Blast Theory’s A Machine to See With uses Asterisk open-source call center software to construct a city-specific branching narrative with film noir and Nouvelle Vague overtones. Players sign up online and receive automated messages instructing them to travel to various locations in the city. Once at these locations, players receive additional calls containing more pieces of the fragmented narrative. The story itself is further customized based on the players’ responses to various phone-tree-driven polls.
